Biographical info

Name: Alexander Emmanuel Rodolphe Agassiz

Born: 1835; Died: 1910

Major Accomplishments:

The son of Louis Agassiz, he earned degrees in natural history and engineering at Harvard University, and worked as a mining engineer and a professor. He succeeded his father as director of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, and established a marine laboratory at Newport Rhode Island. As Commander of the Albratross Expeditions to the Tropical Pacific, he was directly and indirectly responsible for the discovery of many medusa species. His collaborators on the medusae included A.G. Mayer, H.B. Bigelow, and J.W. Fewkes (though he had particular contempt for Fewkes!).
