Biographical info

Name: Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel

Born: 1834; Died: 1919

PhD:

Major Accomplishments:
Haeckel served as professor and director of the Zoologisches Institut of the University of Jena, and was a prominent figure in his time as a staunch advocate of Darwinism. He was also responsible for many of the words that we use today (as well as a few that we do not), including gastrula, coelom, and monophyly, and ideas such as Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, the Biogenetic Law, the Gastraea theory. He was a rapid writer and creative illustrator, and wrote monographs on the systematics of the radiolarians, the sponges, and the medusae. His "System der Medusen" (1879-1880) was largely responsible for the medusa classification that we still use today.
