Biographical info

Name: Henry Bryant Bigelow

Born: 3 October 1879, in Boston; Died: 11 December 1967, at his home in Concord, Massachusetts.

PhD: 1906, Harvard.

Major Accomplishments:

Bigelow accompanied Alexander Agassiz on the Albatross Expeditions to the Tropical Pacific, making valuable observations and descriptions of many species of medusae. He was a curator at the Dept. Invertebrate Zoology at Harvard from 1905-1966. In 1931 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for his comprehensive oceanographic work in the Gulf of Maine. He is probably best known as the founder of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts; he served as its first director from 1931-1940.
