Biographical info

Name: Philip A. Alderslade

Born: 24 Nov 1943, Edmonton, UK

PhD: 1995, James Cook University

Major Accomplishments:

Phil worked as a research assistant in the Zoology Dept. of QLD University and the University Dept. of Agriculture, prior to taking a position as Marine Biologist at the Roche Research Institute of Marine Pharmacology, Sydney, Australia, where he worked from 1974 - 1981. Since 1981, he has been the Curator of Cnidaria at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin, Australia. His work is primarily focused on octocorallian systematics, and he is often involved in organizing international workshops, such as the UNESCO/COMAR First Octocoral Research Workshop and Advanced Training Course (Phuket Thailand, 1987), the Soft Coral Taxonomy Training Workshop (USP, Suva, Fiji, 2001), and the Second International Octocoral Taxonomy Workshop (Darwin, Australia, 2002). He also recently coauthored a book with Dr Katharina Fabricius, "Soft Corals and Sea Fans, a comprehensive guide to the tropical shallow-water genera of the Central-West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea" (2001).

Phil is well established in the Octocoral world, but has been personally inspirational to me, both as a brother-dad-chum-pal and as a damn good scientist. Although that is enough to land him a place on the Medusozoa Hall of Fame, he has also been instrumental in the discovery of many new medusa species.

Honorific taxa:
