Biographical info Name: Stephen Douglas Cairns Born: 26 November, 1949, in Port Sulphur, Louisiana PhD: l976, University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (Biological Oceanography). Major Accomplishments: Curator of Cnidaria at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution). Cairns made extensive contributions to the taxonomy of the hydrocorals, followed by the scleractinian corals, and recently switched to the deep-water octocorals.
